Psyche Relief Campaigning for Mental Health Awareness
Psyche Relief Campaigning for Mental Health Awareness
The Problem
There is a lot of misinformation and myths besetting mental illness in Uganda. For example, the symptoms of mental illness are often construed as consequences of curses or witchcraft.
Estimates suggest that up to 35% of Ugandans suffer a mental disorder and 15% require treatment (BJ psych Int.,2017) If left untreated, these can lead to poor well-bring and suicide.
The Product
Psyche Relief is using social media campaigns for sensitization to increase young people’s awareness and knowledge of mental health in Uganda.
The Impact
Mental health is important at every stage of life, including childhood and adolescence. Currently a lot of focus is on it’s effect on adults.
The work Psyche Relief will eventually increase self efficacy and confidence in young people to comfortably reach out and ask for help when they suspect to have mental health issues.
The Future
Psyche Relief is currently in the process of formally registering and plans to open a physical address to offer professional counselling from. Future strategies could involve establishing school support groups and/or organizing infotainment events, depending on the results of prototyping.
