The Problem
3.75 million girls in Uganda live without proper sanitary care (SNV, 2014). Disposable menstrual pads are too expensive (approx. $24 per year) and reusable pads have questionable health benefits and girls are embarrassed to wash and hang them to dry.
The Product
Femminae Uganda plans to sell menstrual cups as a better alternative for menstrual health management. They are more comfortable for girls – even enabling them to swim during periods; much cheaper at $10 for ten years of use; and more eco-friendly than disposalble pads.
The Impact
Femminae believe that by selling menstrual cups to girls, alongside training on how to use them appropriately, fewer girls will be missing/dropping-out of school and getting unnecessary infections.
The Future
Femminae is currently raising funds to conduct a pilot of selling 500 cups in Kampala during 2020. This would generate enough revenues for them to break-even and continue sustainably growing.
